Rome boasts the greatest monument of Roman architecture: the Flavian Amphitheatre, which is better known as COLISEUM. It’s one of the most beautiful and imposing monuments of Rome. Its construction started under the Emperor Vespasian and it was inaugurated in 80 AC by the Emperor Titus.

Nowadays the Coliseum has only three fifth of its ancient structure! The COLISEUM was the biggest Arena of the Ancient World.

When it was completely abandoned it was converted into a wide cave of marble, iron and lead which were reused by Popes to build important palaces such as Palazzo Barberini, Piazza Venezia and St.Peter’s Basilica, too. The holes, that are still visible today, were made by Romans to mine iron and lead.

The inauguration ceremony took about 100 days characterised by long fights and battles, animal hunts and amazing spectacles.

During the inauguration period the whole Coliseum was filled with water to represent one of the most spectacular battles of Ancient Rome…authentic boat battles evoking the greatest battles of the past.

At a few steps from the Coliseum it’s possible to admire the famous Arch of Constantine which was erected by the Roman Senate to celebrate the Emperor’s victory over Maxentius. It’s the most antique example of triumphal arches in Rome. It’s unique thanks to the use of “Spolia”, parts of earlier buildings which were reused for its realisation.
